2 Ways To Grow Your Relationships With Your Words

Have you ever experienced a relationship that’s been wounded from a harsh spoken word or neglected from a lack of unspoken words?

I’ve experienced the struggle firsthand. I learned the hard way: words are crucial within a relationship/friendship.

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Ephesians 4:29)

Looking to this verse, the two ways we can deepen relationships by using our words are by saying:

  1. Only what is helpful to someone’s needs
  2. Only what is beneficial to someone’s growth

Has someone ever told you something that’s stuck with you your whole life? I still remember the day when a mentor spoke encouraging words which changed the course of my life. Encouraging words bring life to whoever hears them.

This does not mean give an excessive amount of compliments in a day. Flattery doesn’t meet real needs. This also does not mean to ignore someone’s lifestyle that is not honoring to God. Hard words are sometimes beneficial words.

We need to take note that using our words correctly is also more than just watching what we say, because what we say comes out of what we allow into our minds. A few verses earlier in Ephesians it says in verse 23 that we need “to be made new in the attitude of [our] minds.”

By changing our attitude we change our approach.

When we change our approach in speech, that friend, boyfriend, coworker, spouse will take notice. They can see the attitude behind what we are saying. So whether it is difficult or encouraging, the attitude from which we speak is what dictates the response of the person.

We are called to speak encouragement and to speak against the sin in the person’s life especially someone you care about. But we need to speak from a loving attitude. That makes all the difference.
